Atheism

So many people say that atheists, deep down, wish that god existed. I try to explain to people that although I do not believe that god exists, the existence of this entity is a non-issue with me. I tell them, even if god existed, I would not worship it. The doctrines are things that I don’t agree with. Who is to say that your religion is correct anyway? Even if there is this omniscient being, why does it deserve my worship? It created humans, who I don’t put much faith in whatsoever. It created war, disease, and other horrors in this world, and does nothing about it. Who can watch their children starve and do nothing? Oh, but god gave us free will and it’s the rules for him to not do anything, blah blah. Well, it is god, it can change the rules. Sure, once I turned 18, my parents pushed me out of the nest and I struggled like hell, but they would never let me starve or be homeless. If god doesn’t want to intervene, what are all these ‘miracles’ that are attributed to god? What makes those people so special?

I hate religion. You can do good works without religion, but there are some horrors in this world that COULD NOT be done WITHOUT religion as the reason. I understand there are bad things in this world that are done without religion being an issue, but there are numerous horrors that never would have been had it not been for religion.

My name is Erica and I am an anti-theist.

From another blog, but I’ve definitely said something along these lines before:

“I don’t understand why you’re so upset about Atheist Extremists. The most an Atheist Extremist will do is get angry, throw some insults, maybe bruise someone’s pride and at worst write a book.

The most a Religious Extremist will do is kill their own children, wage war against another group with different beliefs and murder them, delay the scientific progression of the human race, encourage sexism, racism, and violence, fly some planes into some buildings and kill hundreds, blow up clinics and harm or kill people, and a few other lovely extremist actions.”
